Lessons from the analysis of the balance of payments

Abstract

Several important lessons can be drawn from the analysis made in the previous chapter, and it allows some widely spread prejudices concerning the balance of payments to be debated. Examples of the topics studied in this chapter are: Should we care about a trade deficit? What is the possible relation between a public budget deficit and the balance of payments? What is the meaning of a ‘balance of payments disequilibrium’? Is a policy aiming at ‘external equilibrium’ possible and efficient?
