Abstract

External phenomena are seen through the lens of preconception and social schemata. Raw facts must be selected, ranked and situated in patterns. The truth does not speak for itself. In international political economy three sets of hidden assumptions, three mental maps, are of particular value: nationalism, liberalism and Marxism. Affinity, individuality, social class: each belief system reflects the historical setting in which it emerged. It accounts for the subjective baggage that citizens carry with them into the voting booth. Each appeals both to rational calculation and to visceral emotion.
