Abstract

Decisions play an important role in the work of legislators, public administration, and the courts. Decisions are choices between different courses of action. Reaching a decision requires a decision rule or a decision procedure. Majority decisions in parliaments or referendums are examples of such decision-making procedures, just like the judges' logically deductive subsumption model of applying the law, like customs and traditions - for example, the custom according to which the oldest member presides over the first session of the parliament - or the lottery procedure by which citizens were allocated to public offices in ancient Greece.
