Recuadro 1: La historia del dinero contada desde las islas Yap

Abstract

Las islas Yap, en Micronesia, destacan por su sistema único de moneda: las rai, enormes discos de piedra caliza que servían como depósito de valor. Este sistema refleja conceptos universales sobre la confianza y el valor del dinero, comparables con el patrón oro. La experiencia de Yap ilustra cómo el dinero depende más de la confianza y el consenso social que de su valor intrínseco. Este sistema resalta principios fundamentales del funcionamiento monetario moderno, desde el respaldo físico hasta la transición hacia monedas fiduciarias basadas en la confianza.
