Abstract

Desde una perspectiva macroeconómica, el periodo de 1935 y 1945 se puede dividir en dos partes. Por un lado, existió una relativa prosperidad, en esta época el país se vio obligado a equilibrar su balanza comercial para contribuir a generar el equilibrio del sector externo, se creó la Oficina de Control de Cambios y Exportaciones como dependencia del Banco de la República. Durante el periodo entre 1940 y 1944 el ajuste macroeconómico se dio a través de una caída de la inversión dada por la disminución de las importaciones y el aumento del ahorro. En este segundo periodo, el Banco de la República se acomodo a la nueva estrategia fiscal y a los acontecimientos del sector externo. Tal como se verá en este capítulo a partir de los dos últimos años de la administración de Eduardo Santos se adoptó una política keynesiana que aumentó los gastos del Gobierno Central.
