Vocational education: coursetaking choice and impact on dropout and college enrollment rates

Abstract

This work investigates which factors underlie the students’ decision on which secondary track program to enroll in, and its impact on dropout and college enrollment rates. By separating the analysis between low and high-ability students, we find a heterogeneous effect of vocational coursetaking on dropout probabilities, which increase for high-achievers and decrease for low-achievers. Hence, whereas vocational education appears to be successful in engaging students “at risk” in school, it may hinder the academic success of the high-achievers. Special attention is given to the confounding variables used to estimate this effect. Apart from past school performance, previous retentions, college expectations and parents’ education seem to be good predictors of both educational decisions and outcomes.
