Abstract

The transition of European tertiary graduates to labour market is increasingly difficult. In order to promote job creation, European Union recommends self-employment and entrepreneurship (Eurobarometer, 2012). Based on the responses of 214674 individuals, from the 28 EU member states, to “European Labour Force Survey” (EU-LFS) 2013, we investigate to what extend country of residence, education level, field of study, and gender, influence the self-employment rate of young tertiary graduates. Our findings suggest that self-employment rate cannot be explained by academic level, nor by field of study, contrary to country of residence, that assumes a huge importance on this issue: Italy and Greece feature the highest likelihood of being self-employed within the Union. Focusing on self-employment of managers, once more the results show the importance of country of residence: France and United Kingdom have the lowest probabilities, while Italy and, specially, Greece have the highest ones. Finally being a woman decreases the likelihood of a manager turns into an entrepreneur.
