Abstract

This monograph presents the situation in the communities that were heavily affected by mine tailings deposited in Calancan Bay, Marinduque Island, Philippines. The bay had been the discharge point of mine tailings of the Marcopper Mining Corporation for 18 years. This publication discusses the ecological, social, economic, and political issues that currently impinge on the integrity, rehabilitation, and conservation of Calanan Bay's coastal resources. It also shares SEARCA's experience in managing and conserving the degraded coastal ecosystem of Calancan Bay. Its aim is to provide insight to planners, researchers, community workers, and policymakers.
