Abstract

Este libro es el resultado de más de diez años de investigación sobre los temas de desarrollo urbano en Bogotá, Colombia. La versión original fue escrita en inglés como tesis doctoral presentada al University College London en 2007. El enfoque central que le da su autora es del debate sobre la participación comunitaria en los barrios irregulares de Bogotá. El contexto tanto nacional como internacional que rodea a los barrios irregulares ha cambiado radicalmente desde el final de la década de los años noventa, sobre todo en términos de la relación entre el Estado, la sociedad civil y el mercado. Mientras tanto, los debates sobre el papel de la participación comunitaria y sus implicaciones en las políticas de desarrollo urbano han sido cada vez más frecuentes. Aquí se analiza cómo ha cambiado la relación entre el Estado y la comunidad en el marco de la participación comunitaria y, a la vez, hasta dónde la participación comunitaria o la lucha popular basada en este concepto puede ser útil para el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de los habitantes de estos barrios.
