Abstract

Este trabajo sobre la minería (oro, esmeraldas y carbón) se ocupa de la actividad económica de productos que son síntesis del pasado y el presente de la economía colombiana: el oro como columna vertebral y sostén de la dominación española y presente hasta hoy en la vida de la república desde el siglo XIX, y las esmeraldas con historia paralela a la del oro. Con la moderna explotación carbonífera de exportación, desde la última década del siglo XX se modifica radicalmente la canasta exportadora colombiana, pues si el oro y el carbón contribuían en 1990 al fondo de divisas con un 75% de lo aportado por el café, en el año 2003 el valor de las exportaciones de oro y carbón multiplicaba por 2.5 veces el valor de las exportaciones cafeteras, sin contar las exportaciones de petróleo, generadoras de expectativas en los años 90.
