Abstract

Methane emission management within the liquefied natural gas (LNG) value chain is receiving increasing attention due to international initiatives such as the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) and Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP2.0), and the Coalition for LNG Emission Abatement toward Net-Zero (CLEAN). For the LNG industry to leverage this growing momentum, it must address methane emissions proactively and ensure greater transparency in providing information. While LNG offers numerous advantages – such as enhancing economic competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and energy security (the 3Es) – it is imperative to scientifically verify that methane emissions from the LNG industry remain minimal. Ensuring that ‘clean gas’ is truly clean requires concerted efforts from both companies and regulatory authorities. By adopting transparent practices and stringent verification processes, the LNG industry can reinforce its role in achieving global climate goals. This research aims to develop a resilient strategy for addressing methane emissions in the ASEAN region, a critical player in the global natural gas industry, by aligning regional practices with international standards and promoting sustainable growth in the sector.
