Abstract

A unique source of reference, this volume encompasses the large and diverse literature on entrepreneurship. The extensive introduction presents an original synthesis of old and new theories, integrating risk and uncertainty, market process and the organization of the firm. Selections from key theoretical sources constitute the first part of the volume. The second part is devoted to recent empirical work; it includes the social origins and career paths of entrepreneurs, business start-ups and the influence of firm size on innovation. The final section considers cultural factors in economic development, with special reference to immigrant groups, religion and the state. The interdisciplinary nature of the selection will make the book an indispensable reference source for economists as well as scholars in other disciplines concerned with entrepreneurship.
