Abstract

This second volume of Alec Nove’s previously unpublished writings provides a unique insight into the developments in Communist and Postcommunist countries from the late 1960s to the mid 1990s. It contains diaries, letters and reports to policymakers written in Alec Nove’s accessible style. Included are letters to the then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and to the British Embassy in Moscow seeking to make sense of the changes occurring in the former Soviet Union during the late 1980s, as well as analyses of the turbulence experienced in Russia and Ukraine since the end of Communism. Covering the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and China this book will be an invaluable insight into the work and travels of one of the most important scholars on this subject.
