Abstract

Der 300. Geburtstag von Adam Smith bot 2023 die Gelegenheit, sich ausführlich mit Leben, Werk und Nachwirkung des Gründers der modernen Ökonomik zu beschäftigen. Die acht Beiträge dieses Bandes bieten nicht nur einen ausführlichen Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der ökonomischen und nicht-ökonomischen Smith-Forschung. Näher beleuchtet werden auch die wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnisse in Schottland zur Zeit von Adam Smith sowie der Einfluss klassischer Philosophie auf sein Denken. In der Gegenüberstellung zu anderen bedeutenden wissenschaftlichen Programmen, denen von Hume, Fichte, Hegel, Thünen, Marx und Schumpeter, werden schließlich besondere Aspekte des Werks von Smith genauer herausgearbeitet – die Methodik der wissenschaftlichen Analyse, der (konfliktreiche) Zusammenhang von Handel, Krieg und Frieden sowie die Einstellung zu Modernisierung und zivilisatorischer Entwicklung.
