Abstract

"En los últimos años los aportes de los economistas que siguen la orientación institucionalista, iniciada por autores como el premio nobel Douglas C. North, han ejercido una gran influencia en la academia. Esa orientación señala que a largo plazo lo que determina el comportamiento económico de los países es la calidad de las instituciones, entendidas no como las organizaciones, sino como las reglas de juego y los incentivos para las acciones de los individuos en la sociedad. Sin embargo, a menudo ese énfasis estructuralista nos hace olvidar que las instituciones son solo una especie de senderos que orientan, limitan o incentivan la ruta que siguen los agentes económicos, pero son siempre y en todas partes los individuos, con mayores o menores márgenes, los que actúan. Por esa razón, la calidad y las características del liderazgo son dimensiones sociales relevantes en el desempeño de los países y las organizaciones. En este libro presentamos los perfiles profesionales, y algo sobre sus características personales, de los tres últimos gerentes generales del Banco de la República, una de las entidades económicas más influyentes en Colombia en el último siglo. Nos referimos a Francisco Ortega, Miguel Urrutia y José Darío Uribe. Estos perfiles fueron analizados por los economistas Roberto Steiner, Salomón Kalmanovitz y Leonardo Villar. Los tres gerentes mencionados se caracterizan por su larga trayectoria en la institución, el prestigio profesional y su reconocimiento en la sociedad colombiana e incluso en el exterior. La solidez del liderazgo de los gerentes ha sido parte importante del prestigio que ha tenido el Banco de la República desde su fundación en 1923. Tomado del prólogo del libro"
