La economía de las ciénagas del Caribe colombiano

Abstract

"La región Caribe cuenta con una gran riqueza en humedales y contiene el 82% de las ciénagas del país. Dada la importancia de las ciénagas y el gran número de ellas en la región Caribe, tres investigadores del Centro de Estudios Económicos Regionales, CEER, del Banco de la República, sucursal Cartagena — Irene Salazar Mejía, Joaquín Viloria de la Hoz y María M. Aguilera Díaz — estudiaron cuatro de las más grandes ciénagas del país ubicadas en tres departamentos de la región Caribe colombiana: la ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Magdalena), la ciénaga de Zapatosa (Cesar y Magdalena), la ciénaga Grande del Bajo Sinú (Córdoba) y la ciénaga de Ayapel (Córdoba). estas se analizaron aspectos geográficos, ambientales, demográficos, sociales y económicos, haciendo énfasis en los activos ecológicos y en el problema ambiental. También se analizaron las características de la población de los trece municipios donde estas ciénagas tienen sus fronteras, la cual supera los 410 mil habitantes. Gran parte de estas personas tiene bajos niveles de educación y vive en condiciones de extrema pobreza. Este problema ha llevado a la sobreexplotación y, en otros casos, explotación ineficiente de los recursos naturales, pues sus economías son dependientes de las actividades extractivas de subsistencia como la pesca artesanal."
