Abstract

We give an introduction to the calculational methods used to investigate the structure of strongly interacting particles within the framework of lattice QCD, the fundamental theory of strong interactions. The analogy of and the difference to a calculation of equilibrium properties in statistical mechanics are pointed out. We discuss the algorithm used for the most CPU – intensive part of the calculation: the inversion of a large sparse matrix. The physical examples are the calculations of the strength of beta-decay and the$B - \bar B$mixing matrix element. The latter is of great interest for the interpretation of current high energy experiments and also gives insight into the accuracy of the static approximation for b-quarks.
