Comments on “Government and Market in Economic Development†by Cho Soon

Abstract

The role of government in economic development has been a focus of intensive study lately. One example is the World Bank’s recent report, The East Asian Miracle, on the experiences of the East Asian countries (World Bank 1993). Cho’s paper (1994) presents a nice summary of his views on the role of government in economic development. My comments consist of three parts: first, an endorsement of Cho’s view on the changing role of government as the economy develops from a primitive stage of development to an industrialized state; second, a discussion of outstanding points with questions and comments; and third, directions for future research…
