Asian and Pacific Developing Economies: Performance and Issues

Abstract

During 1983 and 1984, the economies of the developing countries in the Asian and Pacific region regained the growth momentum they experienced during the 1970s. This was due to the steady economic recovery of the industrialized countries, in general, and the rapid expansion of the economy of the United States, in particular, the latter being intensified by a strong U.S. dollar. While there were few exceptions to the recovery of the developing economies in the region during 1983 and 1984, a general slowdown in the growth of demand in the industrialized countries in 1985 decelerated economic growth in the developing countries during that year and dampened their growth prospects for 1986…
