Asian and Pacific Developing Economies: Performance and Issues

Abstract

In the early 1980s, following the second oil shock in 1979, the Asian and Pacific developing countries as a group fared better than other developing regions of the world. During the last two years, the economies in this region have continued to grow faster than those in other developing regions. In several Asian countries, living standards rose markedly, despite the recession in 1981-1982. The Newly Industrializing Countries (NICs) in the region still had the highest increases in productivity and income, but several other countries also maintained their growth momentum…
