U.S. Trade Policy and Asian Development

Abstract

Trade policy of the United States is of particular importance to developing countries in Southeast and East Asia. It is in this region that an economic development revolution has occurred over the past 25 years which future historians may compare with the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe. The major impetus to the impressive and, in some instances, remarkable economic growth of these countries has been international trade, specifically, the importation of capital goods and needed intermediate inputs and the export of manufactured goods to developed countries. The United States has been a major participant in that trade; hence, U.S. trade policies are of vital concern to countries in Southeast and East Asia…
