Performance and Development Needs of Asian Agriculture

Abstract

The Asian Development Bank has carried out two major surveys of the agriculture sector in its Asian developing member countries (DMCs). The first survey was conducted in 1967 and the second survey in 1976. The first survey was carried out in an atmosphere of optimism based on the expectation that the new production technologies, centered around high-yielding varieties of foodgrains, would revolutionize farming in large parts of Asia and would be able to neutralize or overcome the effects of inequitable land distribution and inadequate institutions.
