Abstract
Rock glacier structure, velocity and morphology were studied on the island of Prins Karls Forland, western Svalbard (78°50′N, 10°30′E). On the north‐western part of the island, lobate rock glaciers build a 10 km long continuous transition between rockwall and strandflat area. In this area, a high‐resolution digital elevation model (DEM) was constructed, and surface velocity measurements and DC resistivity soundings were carried out on selected rock glaciers. The conceptual model of Haeberli and Vonder Mühll is discussed for high arctic areas, where the permafrost base is beneath the base of the rock glaciers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
