Physical modelling of periglacial solifluction: Review and future strategy

Abstract

Physical modelling of slow cryogenic mass wasting (solifluction) is reviewed in terms of both laboratory methods and major results. Experiments have mainly involved construction of model slopes using frost‐susceptible non‐cohesive sandy silts and silty sands and in most cases freezing and thawing is from the top downwards. The potential for detailed automatic monitoring of parameters such as soil temperatures, surface frost heave, downslope displacement and porewater pressures is illustrated in some recent experiments. Finally the potential for scale centrifuge modelling under enhanced gravity fields is discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
