Abstract
Systematic transect and grid surveys of ventifact presence/absence were made in order to assess palaeo‐ventifact abundance/distribution through Denmark and southern Sweden. The transects reveal a continuous ventifact distribution from western Denmark to south‐central Sweden giving evidence for the existence of significant palaeo‐wind action in extensive areas previously thought lacking in such evidence. Based on ice recession dates and vegetation development, ventifact formation is interpreted as having occurred mainly contemporaneously with the receeding Weichselian ice‐sheet. A grid survey in Scania, southern Sweden, demonstrates a continuous ventifact distribution irrespective of surface materials and topography. The ventifact occurrence outside areas with sandy soils indicates that suspended particles were effective abrading agents. Stable ventifacts confirm previous observations of easterly wind abrasion in Scania and exhibit an extremely small directional variability within, and between, sites. Ventifacts in southern Scandinavia are probably more indicative of transitory paraglacial conditions than periglacial conditions as such. Un transect et des levés en grille systématiques de la présence ou de l'absence de cailloux éolisés ont été réalisés pour évaluer l'abondance des éolisations et leur distribution au Danemark et dans la Suède méridionale centrale. Les transects révèlent une distribution continue des blocs éolisés à l'ouest du Danemark jusqu'à la Suède établissant ainsi l'existence d'actions éoliennes dans des régions étendues où elles n'étaient pas connues. D'après les dates du recul glaciaire et celles du développement de la végétation, le façonnement des cailloux éolisés se serait produit pendant le recul de la demière glaciation. Un levé en grille dans la Scania, au sud de la Suède, démontre une distribution continue des blocs éolisés indépendamment des matériaux de surface et de la topographie. La présence de cailloux éolisés en dehors des régions sableuses indique que les particules en suspension étaient des agents d'abrasion efficaces. Les blocs inamovibles confirment en Scania les observations antérieures de vents venus de l'Est et montrent une variabilityé en direction de ceux‐ci extrěmement faible. Les blocs éolisés du sud de la Scandinavie indiquent probablement des conditions paraglaciaires transitoires plutǒt que de vraies conditions périglaciaires.
