Abstract
δ18O and δD values (% SMOW) were measured on 159 samples from the active layer and permafrost on peat plateaus and from the adjacent fen at sites about 50 km north of Tuchitua along the Robert Campbell Highway in southeastern Yukon Territory. The regression lines for the samples from the active layer and the permafrost were very similar, which suggests that they both contained mainly water from meteoric sources. The water samples from the fen produced results which gave a noticeably different regression line, so that it appears that the icy core of the peat plateaus is the result of downward penetration of precipitation into permafrost rather than freezing water migrating from the surrounding fen. These relationships appear to be constant throughout the study area, and there is no evidence of the ice being from an earlier, colder period. The precipitation in this area of the Yukon Territory shows a δD versus δ18O behaviour somewhat like that reported for Whitehorse in the literature. Les valeurs de δ18O et de δD (% SMOW) ont été mesurées sur 159 échantillons de la couche active et du permafrost des plateaux palsiques et des marais voisins dans des sites situés à environ 50 km au nord de Tuchitua le long de l'autoroute Campbell (SE du territoire du Yukon). Les droites de régression obtenues pour les échantillons provenant de la couche active et du permafrost sont très semblables, suggérant que, dans ces deux domaines, se trouve principalement de l'eau d'origine météorique. Les échantillons d'eau provenant des marais voisins donnent des résultats qui s'ordonnent suivant une droite de régression nettement différente, de telle sorte qu'il apparaǐt que les noyaux de glace des plateaux palsiques tourbeux résultent de la pénétration vers le bas des précipitations dans le permafrost plutǒt que du gel d'eau venue du marais voisin. Ces relations semblent constantes dans toute la région étudiée et il n'y a aucune évidence de l'existence de glace résultant d'une période plus ancienne et plus froide. Les précipitations dans cette région du Yukon montrent une relation entre le δD et le δ18 quelque peu semblable à celle décrite pour la région de Whitehorse dans la littérature.
