Abstract

Between 1991 and 1996, stone‐banked sheets were studied on the eastern side (ESE orientation) of La Mortice massif, Haute‐Ubaye, Southern French Alps. In this high mountain environment where seasonal frost penetrates deep in the soil, the mean annual cumulative value of displacement is between 1.8 and 3.61 cm a−1. The last two years of the study demonstrate the relation between displacement increase and climatic parameters. In particular, analysis shows that displacements are due to temperature decrease during August and September. This causes frost action (frost creep, pipkrakes). Also, the increase in wet climatic conditions during July and August increases the action of cryogenic processes.
