Relationship between fertilizer consumption and labour supply in Bangladesh

Abstract

The objectives of this paper are to estimate fertilizer consumption relationships using Bangladesh farm‐level survey data for the year 1981‐82. Various hypotheses were put to a test and it was found that structural, environmental and institutional factors were important in explaining farmers' use of fertilizers for rice crop. The price elasticity of fertilizer demand ranged between −0.72 to −0.78 on cross‐section data. Fertilizers and hired labour were complements, with a non‐price definition while with a price definition they were substitutes.
