Preliminary country‐scale assessment of carbon dioxide storage potential in Iran

Abstract

This study is a country‐scale assessment of the CO 2 storage potential in Iran. Estimates are given of the CO 2 storage capacity in saline water‐bearing sedimentary rocks and enhanced oil and gas recovery operations. The results suggest that of the order of 70 Gt CO 2 storage capacity may be present in saline aquifers, approximately 19 Gt CO 2 storage capacity could result from enhanced oil recovery, and 1.1 Gt capacity could result from enhanced gas recovery, indicating great potential for CO 2 storage in Iran. These results must be treated with great caution however, due to the scoping nature of the study. More detailed studies of the most promising basins are recommended. Enhanced oil recovery appears to be the most promising route to geological CO 2 storage in Iran because of the potential economic benefits. © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
