Abstract

The article is dedicated to the historic pathway of the teaching of economic theory – Political economy. Within the 90-year - long history of University of Economics the author distinguishes three periods: from the creation of the Higher School Of Commerce (the predecessor of this University) until 1945, from 1945 till 1989, and after 1990 – with the transition to General Economic Theory (Economics). There are given the views of leading lecturers. In each of the three periods the author analyses the unity o f teaching and research. His principal position is that the beliefs that prevailed during the different historical periods must be viewed and assessed in their respective historical context. There are systematized the lessons and formulated tasks to the Department of General Economic Theory, including the need to revive political economy.
