Abstract

During the years of their development, the cooperatives in Bulgaria have had periods of significant growth, but also periods of stagnation. They develop over time specific models based on a different subject of activity - agricultural, consumer, credit, all-round, etc. A cooperative is a voluntary association of persons for mutual assistance and cooperation, assuming equal responsibilities and rights. The main purpose of the cooperative enterprise is to satisfy the needs of the members, not to make a profit. Proceeding from the multifacetedness of the researched topic, we limit the purpose of the scientific development to researching the development and applicability of cooperatives in the economic life of Bulgaria. We focus on the moment of their birth, relative to their state at the beginning of the present century, in order to look for a connection and try to explain some trends in their development nowadays.
