Abstract

Theoretically, every item of service which is currently purchased from an outside supplier is a candidate for internal provision and vice versa. In reality the problem is not quite as extensive as this, since there will always be many resources which it would just not be in the manufactures' interest to provide them. Similarly, there will always be many resources which it would not be in manufactures' interest to purchase. By making an item or providing a service for their own selves the manufactures reduce their dependence on other companies and are able to determine their own quality levels and also they preserve their trade secrets. Conversely, to purchase rather than to provide may enable the option to obtain the resources more quickly, and to obtain the benefits of a continual development programme which otherwise could not sustain. Additionally, purchase instead of self-production may reduce costs such as those associated with storage, handling, paperwork, etc. as well as releasing the manufactures' facilities for jobs on which they might be more suitably and profitably employed.
