Global sustainability, international trade and environmental policy

Abstract

Las naciones están siendo conducidas hacia la sustentabilidad ambiental (SA) y la globalización. La SA implica conservar el flujo de materia prima y energía dentro de las capacidades regenerativas y de asimilación del ambiente, mientras que la globalización entraña la adopción de medidas favorables al libre comercio (LC), como clave para el desarrollo económico(DE). Las exigencias ecológicas del comercio internacional, pueden terminar siendo barreras proteccionistas no tarifarias que determinan la desigual distribución de beneficios y costos del LC. En estas páginas se plantea el concepto de sustentabilidad ambiental global, su importancia para el DE y los requisitos para que ello se logre. Finalmente, se discuten los argumentos en pro y contra del libre comercio y sus implicaciones para la SA.
