Social and economic status of families in the metropolitan area of Merida

Abstract

La información sobre ingresos proporcionada por 2.600 familias residentes en el área metropolitana de Mérida (AMM), permitió hacer un análisis de sus condiciones socioeconómicas y de la pobreza. Mérida no ha escapado al fenómeno de la pobreza tan generalizado en Venezuela a partir de la década de los 80: el 63% de las familias residentes en el AMM, están en situación de pobreza. La formulación del Plan de Ordenación Urbanística de la Pobreza, sugiere algunos lineamientos de política económica en el AMM, para evitar que la pobreza se siga incrementando. En particular, se propone la diversificación de las actividades económicas, dándole prioridad a aquellas para las cuales el AMM tiene ventajas comparativas (turismo y actividades conexas, servicios educativos y de asesorías altamente especializadas, agroindustria, confección, electrónica y otras) por último se describe algunos efectos económicos negativos que se suscitarían se continuar con una actividad económica altamente dependiente del gasto público y de la Universidad de los Andes, dado que el programa de ajustes económicos tiende a reducir el gasto público en términos reales para evitar los déficit fiscales.
