The evolution of the population and the urban process of the state of Merida. Period n1941-1981

Abstract

El proceso de urbanización del Estado Mérida, más tardío con respecto al país en su totalidad, se consolida y toma mayor impulso a partir del período intercensal 1961- 1971 con la ciudad de Mérida a la cabeza, extendiéndose hacia La Parroquia y Ejido, bajo los efectos de la suburbanización. También durante este período, Lagunillas y Tovar aumentan sus niveles de urbanización, surge Arapuey y El Vigía se erige como el principal contendor de Mérida en su esfuerzo por disputarle a ésta su hegemonía urbana. En 1971 los centros urbanos se elevan a nueve. La capital se acerca a los 75.000 habitantes. El Vigía sobrepasa los 20.000 habitantes, mientras que Tovar, Ejido y La Parroquia superan cada uno los 10.000 habitantes. En 1981, Mérida, La Parroquia y Ejido (que conforman el Área Metropolitana de Mérida) concentran 164.316 habitantes. De persistir el crecimiento hasta entonces observado, esta área podría albergar 275.359 habitantes en 1990 y 359.709 al finalizar el presente siglo.
