Abstract

Lo que menos puede justificarse es que algunos de los más grandes proyectos de desarrollo en países del tercer mundo, y que involucran trascendentales aspectos sociales, culturales, políticos y ambientales, aparte de los económicos, sean realizados y controlados por una institución bancaria, como el Banco Mundial, que forzosamente sigue una política donde predominan los cálculos de costo-beneficio, que en nuestro tiempo son siempre a corto plazo. De ahí la terrible contradicción en que tales institutos financieros incurren al prometer hacer compatibles sus metas económico utilitarias con las ecológico ambientales, que deben ser de largo plazo y afectan aún a futuras generaciones (véase la nota del traductor).
