Discurso pronunciado con motivo de la Ofrenda Floral al Padre de la Patria en ocasión del XXX Aniversario de la Facultad de Economía de la Universidad de Los Andes

Abstract

Los discursos en las plazas públicas tienen el sabor de las cosas añejas y nos recuerdan los tiempos pretéritos. Me transportan sin dificultad a los encuentros ciudadanos de la Venezuela agraria y rural del siglo XIX. De aquella Venezuela sin caminos y huérfana de servicios, con pequeñas ciudades que crecían en franco aislamiento con respecto a las publicaciones vecinas, y donde la Plaza Bolívar, o la plaza principal, era el lugar obligatorio de convergencia de ansia colectiva. En las ocasiones solemnes, el discurso en la plaza era el gran acontecimiento. La palabra grave y sonora del orador de orden, preñada de hipérboles y de conceptos altisonantes, discurría sin cansancio sobre las gestas de los héroes de la Patria, el clamor fragoso de las batallas y el sacrificio personal.
