Abstract

This article aims to analyze the effects of non-farm income on poverty of farmers. The analysis is made using the method of separation index FGT (Foster-Greer-Thorbecke index) based on three poverty line income (PLI). The data used is gathered from a survey using a set of questionnaire conducted on farmers in six districts in Kedah. A total of 384 questionnaires were distributed with the help of enumerators conducted between April and December 2008. The sample size was determined through two-layered random sampling method and quotas. As a result, six out of eleven districts have been selected, i.e. Kubang Pasu, Sik, Kota Setar, Baling, Kulim and Pulau Langkawi. The study found that, at all three levels of PLI, almost all the results showed non-farm income could have a positive impact on reducing poverty among farmers.
