Abstract

The idea of an investment development path (IDP) was introduced by Dunning in 1979. The IDP hypothesizes an association between a country’s level of development (proxied by Gross Domestic Product per capita) and its international investment position (net outward foreign direct investment (FDI) stock, i.e. outward minus inward direct investment stocks). This articles examines the idea of IDP by relating net PDf to per capita income, for Malaysia. A relationship between investment and development is tested using relevant data from 1970 to 1998. It examines whether Malaysia’s FDI follows a similar pattern to the one described by the IDP theorem. The regression results appears to support the claims that Malaysia ‘s FDI entered stage 1 and 2 of the 5 stages of IDP, thereby giving some support to the lDP paradigm.
