Abstract

Investment priority in land development since the last two decades has primarily been overshadowed by the importance of oilpalm. Its dominance continues to influence agricultural investors even after the American Soyabean Association’s campaign that resulted in the decline of demand for the Malaysia’s palm oil in the late 80’s. An analysis is therefore necessary to identify choice in portfolio investment between oilpalm and rubber in a simplified E-V frontier problem. The result evidently suggests that although oilpalm was able to generate a higher expected return, it was much more risky compared to rubber. The paper also discusses the performance of these primary commodities in the light of FELDA scheme during the period from the First to the Fifth Malaysia Plan.
