Aplicaciones del análisis del tipo de cambio real

Abstract

Este artículo presenta un enfoque para analizar variaciones en el tipo de cambio real. En él se mencionan tres definiciones del tipo de cambio real y las complejas fuerzas que lo hacen variar. Usando datos de las Estadísticas Financieras Internacionales del Fondo Monetario Internacional, el análisis se enfoca sobre países seleccionados, cada uno elegido porque su experiencia refleja la operación de una fuerza principal que afecta al tipo de cambio real (TCR). Un resumen de las experiencias de varios países durante el período 1970-1983 ilustra la importancia del TCR durante episodios inflacionarios, crisis del petróleo, movimientos masivos de capital y crisis de deuda durante el período. El análisis dirige la atención hacia el rol central que han jugado los movimientos del TCR en la crisis de deuda internacional.
