Journal Writing as a Coping Mechanism: A Case Study of a Gifted Young Woman - Lucy Maud Montgomery

Abstract

This paper explores the childhood and adolescent years in the life of well-known Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. The purpose of this article is to show how she used personal journaling as a resilient coping mechanism to help overcome the challenges she faced as a gifted and talented girl. Challenges Montgomery experienced revolved around the personality characteristics associated with being gifted and talented. Also, her gifts and talents were not valued at home and under appreciated at the school she attended, a school that espoused rigid rules and where classroom routines stifl ed the gifted and talented student. This article draws upon Montgomery’s personal journals spanning 1880 to 1935. Her writings were examined using an in-depth case study methodology with the aim of understanding how Montgomery’s journal writing facilitated resiliency and coping.
