Abstract

We propose an asymptotically optimal solution for the two-stage no-wait proportionate flow shop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the total absolute deviation of job completion times. The proposed solution is within 1% of the optimum for problems with more than 20 jobs. We also show that the problem is solved optimally in constant time for the special case where the two smallest jobs have equal processing times. Our results provide answers to most of the outstanding research questions for this problem.
