Comparison between microstrip and dipole antenna backed by a corner reflector

Abstract

Microstrip antenna can be applied together with a corner reflector to achieve higher directivity, similar to the dipole antenna. In a microstrip antenna, the corner reflector reduces to four rectangular reflecting plates on the sides of the antenna. A significant portion of the corner reflector behind the microstrip is not needed, thus reducing the volume of corner reflector by 35% with the final reflecting structure resembling the flare of a horn antenna. The maximum feed-to-vertex distance reduces from 2λ/3$ 2\lambda/3 $ in a dipole to 0.4λ$ 0.4\lambda $ in a microstrip antenna, for the condition of only one radiation lobe within the included angle of the corner reflector. The highest directivity is obtained at feed-to-vertex distance of 0.4λ.$ 0.4\lambda. $ The gain of the microstrip antenna with reflectors is increased by 2.6 dB compared to an increase of 3 dB gain in a dipole backed by corner reflector.
