Diversity in Residential Real Estate Sales Brokerages: A Study of Five Indiana Cities

Abstract

In 1996, the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) voluntarily entered a Fair Housing Agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to increase racial and cultural diversity in real estate agency. Using brokerage websites, the authors compared the demographics of real estate salespeople in five Indiana cities with the demographics of both the general population and homeowners. Real estate salespeople were disproportionally female and younger than homeowners. Minorities were underrepresented relative to the overall population, but this effect largely disappeared when compared to homeowner demographics. Overall, significant differences existed between the demographic profile of residential real estate salespeople and the markets they serve.
