To Intervene or Not to Intervene: This Is Smith’s Problem

Abstract

Adam Smith is not a dogmatic thinker. His policy prescriptions on whether to intervene in the economy or not depend on his analysis of whether the policies are benefiting only an order of citizens at the expense of society. If the interventions benefit an order of citizens but hurt society, Smith condemns them. If they benefit society, he supports them.
