Abstract
Lindkvist K. B. and Snchez J. L. Conventions and innovation: a comparison of two localized natural resource-based industries, Regional Studies . The paper explores the development of new conventions in two natural resource-based industries, the Norwegian salt fish industry and the wine industry in the Spanish region of Castilla y Len. Modest innovation in the former industry tied to domestic and industrial conventions is contrasted with the success of the latter. Wine producers have adopted the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) system to satisfy the market's demand for quality. Whereas Norwegian salt fish producers are reluctant to cooperate with non-local institutions, external influences in the wine industry have provided market intelligence and scientific knowledge to winegrowers and wineries.
