Abstract

HOOD N. and TAGGART, J. H. (1997) German foreign direct investment in the UK and Ireland: survey evidence Reg. Studies 31, 139-150. This paper explores the characteristics and development patterns of German manufacturing subsidiaries in the UK and Ireland. It is based on a sample of 102 companies which were surveyed during 1994. A series of hypotheses are tested relating both to the literature on subsidiary development and to the previous limited knowledge of intra-EU investment at the level of firms. A number of policy issues are considered, from the perspectives of regional economic development agencies, for German multinational companies and for intrapreneurial activity leading to the potential expansion of these types of subsidiary.
