Metaphors and entrepreneurship: points of view, goals and future research questions

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the application of metaphors in entrepreneurship research. By analysing a range of articles published in scientific journals, we explore diverse perspectives on the use of metaphors, including those held by researchers, entrepreneurs, the media, and the general public. Specifically, we examine the goals behind employing metaphors – such as defining, linking, investigating, and enterprising – and highlight common pitfalls to be avoided. Our contribution to the field lies in proposing an integrative model that enhances the understanding of metaphors’ roles in entrepreneurship research. Moreover, we outline potential directions for future inquiry in this evolving area.
