Abstract

The decline of civic engagement has been a constant discourse in US society. John Rennie Short critically evaluates the current debates. His basic argument is that these debates ignore the reality of metropolitan fragmentation and the balkanization of communities. The possibilities of New Urbanism recreating community are critically evaluated. But steps towards civic engagement at an urban level are both possible and necessary.
